Say adios to the Touch ID button on the upcoming iPhones — and don’t expect Apple to embed the technology into the display itself a some have speculated, Ming-Chi Kuo says in a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors. Instead, Apple will go all in with Face ID, the analyst adds.
Touch ID allows fingerprint authentication for enabled devices. Apple says FaceID is “even more convenient than Touch ID.” With Face ID — introduced with the iPhone X — the feature unlocks only when you’re looking at it. It’s designed to resist spoofing by photos or masks. Your facial map is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. And authentication happens instantly on the device, not in the cloud.
The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks that Chi is right in predicting that all new iPhones will pack Face ID. I also think this will be true of the new iPad Pros and, at some point, will be introduced for the Mac.
