Which mobile threat trends will prevail and which will fail over the coming months?

Security expert Michael Covington, vice president of Portfolio Strategy at Apple device management and security company Jamf, is placing bets on which mobile threat trends will prevail and which will fail over the coming months.

There are certainly still a lot of balls up in the air, but here are his initial predictions:

  • Malware and poor defenses will dominate. Recent Jamf research has shown that over 21 NEW malware families emerged on macOS (which Jamf monitors using its MDM offering) last year alone, but over a third of organizations are still running devices vulnerable to cyber attacks.
  • Quantum isn’t a big player now…but could make the final 4 by 2030. Quantum computing capabilities are slowly but surely showing their teeth, ready to make it to at least the final 4 in the coming years…and if we don’t shore up defenses now, quantum threats to mobile devices will make all other threats look weak.
  • Ransomware will be a first-round elimination. The slam dunk? Jamf has found that ransomware really isn’t having an impact on mobile devices. We can go ahead and rule this threat out for now as a major competitor.
