In a tweet, the Apple leaker known as “ShrimpApplePro” says he can confirm an Apple Watch Ultra in a black titanium is coming this year, along with the current standard titanium design.
This reiterates a Sunday report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his “Power On” newsletter. He adds that before the release of last year’s Ultra model, Apple tested a dark titanium color option. It ultimately canceled the option because designers didn’t like the appearance, but it could still theoretically arrive this year, Gurman says.
He also thinks that all of this year’s Apple Watch models will get a fairly sizable performance bump thanks to the new S9 processor. “This marks the first time since the S6 chip launched in 2020 — with the Series 6 watch — that the lineup gets significant speed improvements,” Gurman writes.
In other rumors about the Apple Watch Ultra, this year’s update will be lighter than the current model, according to a rumor posted on Chinese social media site Weibo. The current model weighs 61.3 grams compared to the 32 grams of the 41mm aluminum Apple Watch Series 8.
However, a seemingly conflicting rumor claims that an even bigger Apple Watch Ultra may arrive next year. The current Ultra has a 1.93-inch display, while the 2024 version will be 10% larger with a 50mm case size per the report, according to DigiTimes.
ShrimpApplePro also tweets that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 will feature the same design as the Series 8, with 41mm and 45mm case sizes, but a new pink color will be available for the aluminum model.
