tvOS 11 rolls out with AirPlay 2 support

Apple has rolled out tvOS 11 with AirPlay 2, which offers multi-room audio support. It also includes the ability to automatically switch between light and dark interface modes.

AirPlay 2 is Apple’s followup to the original AirPlay Wi-Fi-based music playback standard. While Sonos popularized Wi-Fi-based multi-room audio playback, Bluetooth became ubiquitous, and multi-platform Wi-Fi audio standards spread in popularity, Apple lacked a competing story until AirPlay 2.

Alas, tvOS 11 doesn’t add Amazon Prime Video support. It will arrive later, perhaps in the fall.

To install tvOS 11, launch the Settings app on your Apple TV, select System, select Software Updates, and then choose Update Software. Once the update finishes downloading select Install Now.
