The LaVolta turns your iMac into a portable (if you have strong shoulders)

It’s been a cold, snowy, winter here in Nashville, Tennessee — and we still have a couple of months to go!. There’s always a chance that, if my neck of the woods ices over, the power will go out. If that happens, I’ll pack my 27-inch iMac 5K in my LaVolta Carry Case, head to a place where there’s working electricity, and carry on with my chores for AppleWorld Today (you’re welcome).

As much as I like my 12.9-inch iPad Pro, I don’t want to be using it for hours (or days) at a time for my daily work. For that, I need — or at least want — lots of screen real estate.

The big ol’ iMac isn’t built for portability, however, so I need something to transport and protect it at the same time. Enter the leather Lavolta Carrying Case, which has been specially designed for the all-in-one. It’s made of leather and thick felt with soft yet protective velvet lining

Created by Aliaksei Malevich at an East London hackathon, it lets you pack your desktop into a carry-on sized bag and sling it over your shoulder. At least, if you’ve got strong shoulders, as the LaVolta weights 1.7 pounds atop the 27-inch iMac Pro’s 21 pounds.

The LaVolta has a large pocket for an Apple Keyboard, Apple Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse. There’s also a smaller pocket for cables, keys, or other items.

I can’t see myself taking the iMac on a business trip that involves air travel, but if that’s your cup of tea, the Lavolta — which I’ve heard described as the “unholy lovechild of an Apple Store and a Louis Vuitton handbag” — is carry-on size.

It sells on Amazon and Etsy for $79.99 and $69.99, respectively. There are other carrying cases for the iMac, including the $160 Pelican 1600 (14 pounds) and $199 Gator G—CPR-IM27 (nine pounds). They do offer more protection, but I prefer the LaVolta because it combines reasonable durability in a light design that’s easy to move — if don’t mind some tech backpacking.
