Samsung Display, Ulvac may work together to make second-get OLED iPad displays

Upcoming iPad Pros and iPad Airs could be offered with matte screens for the first time.

Suppliers Samsung Display and Ulvac are working on display panels for second-generation OLED iPads, according to The Elec.

Specifically, the two are negotiating on pricing for Samsung to use Ulvac’s substrate deposition machines. Samsung Display is expected to make the final decision next month on whether it will invest in the production of Gen 8.5 OLED, which will expand its capacity to manufacture OLED panels aimed at IT devices such as tablets and PCs. Using Gen 8.5 substrates for these larger panels instead of Gen 6 (1500x1850mm) substrates used for smartphones is more economical.

However, earlier reports contradict The Elec. LG Display will supply Apple with OLED display panels for future iPads, according to ET News. And in April, The Elec said that China-based BOE Technology plans to supply Apple with OLED displays for future iPad and Mac laptops.
