Russia’s state telecommunications regulator wants Telegram Messenger removed from the Apple App Store

Roskomnadzor, Russia’s state telecommunications regulator, has asked Apple and Google to remove the Telegram Messenger tool from their app stores, according to Reuters.

Telegram is a non-profit service developed by a largely Russian team. The free app offers “simple, fast, secure” instant messaging and syncs across all your devices. You can create group chats for up to 30,000 members.

According to AppleInsider, although the ban is “likely about control of information first and foremost, it also appears to be benefitting services owned by, one of the companies under the control of Alisher Usmanov, an ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.”
