Rumor: upcoming ‘iPhone 12’ will still pack a Lightning connector

Apple leaker and Twitter user “Fudge” tweets that the upcoming iPhone 12 will use a Lightning port instead of USB-C, while the 2021 “iPhone 13” will replace Lightning with wireless charging and/or a Smart Connector depending on the model

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) disagrees, at least in part. I think both the 2020 and 2021 iPhones ill replace the Lightning port with USB-C connectivity. I don’t see any reason to do otherwise.

I’m doubtful about a Smart Connector appearing on an iPhone next year, but I’d love to be wrong. The connector — introduced with the iPad Pro — allows peripherals to be attached magnetically and requires no cords, pairing, or plugs. It’s one of Apple’s most under-utilized technologies.
