Rumor: upcoming iPad Pros may support MagSafe charging

High-end models may offer bilateral charging

Upcoming iPad Pros may support MagSafe charging and a glass back, according to a Bloomberg report. The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks there’s a 100% chance this will happen. After all, Apple loves MagSafe and wireless charging.

Apple says that MagSafe “improves wireless charging for a better, more efficient experience and introduces an ecosystem of easy-to-attach accessories that beautifully complement iPhone 12 Pro models.” It features an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil that connect to the iPhone . They provide up to 15W of power while still accommodating existing Qi-enabled devices.

To facilitate MagSafe charging on an iPad, Bloomberg says the tablets would probably incorporate a glass back. The article adds that Apple is also working on “bilateral” charging for a high-end tablet. Bilateral charging would allow an iPad to  share some of its battery power with other devices. Such devices might include AirPods with a wireless charging case.
