Rumor: LG to make batteries for the ‘iPhone 9’

Forget the (still unannounced) iPhone 8, we need rumors of 2019’s “iPhone 9.” Oh wait, here’s one:

LG will be the sole provider of batteries for the next ten smartphone, according to the Korean Economic Daily (as noted by AppleInsider), quoting an“unnamed source.”

LG has supposedly invested “hundreds of billions” of won in dedicated battery manufacturing facilities and will be ready to begin full-scale production early next year. According to the Korean Economic Daily, the iPhone 9 (shown in a fanciful mockup by iphone9s.us) will adopt a battery module that is “bent” or extended to one side at its bottom to form an “L” shape. So far, all models of the Apple smartphone have relied on standard rectangular “jelly roll” lithium-ion batteries.
