Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass, has launched Photo Backup in Proton Drive for iOS devices.

Photo Backup in Proton Drive for iOS is designed to offer an enhancement to Proton’s privacy-focused storage offering, providing mobile users with a secure way to back up and store their photos directly from their device.

Proton Drive’s end-to-end encryption ensures that stored photos are fully encrypted before they are uploaded, meaning that not even Proton can access these photos, says Anant Vijay Singh, product management Lead at Proton. He adds that Photos in Proton Drive includes:

  • Private and Secure Photo Backup: Proton Drive lets users securely backup their photos and videos. Leveraging end-to-end encryption, personal moments are kept confidential and protected, upholding the highest standards of privacy.
  • Seamless Access Across Devices: The feature offers automatic syncing of camera uploads and gallery viewing on mobile and the web. This ensures that users have convenient access to their photos, maintaining a seamless connection with their digital memories.
  • Effortless Setup and Usage: Photo Backup in Proton Drive is designed for ease of use. Once set up, it automatically uploads all new photos and videos to the cloud, offering users a worry-free backup solution.
  • Intuitive Photo Management: The “Photos” tab features a monthly grid view, providing an aesthetically pleasing and organized method to browse and manage photos. This intuitive interface allows users to easily select, download, preview, or delete their photos and videos. Photos can also be viewed and managed through a desktop web browser.
  • Offline Access to Photos: For users often in areas with limited internet access, the “Available offline” feature ensures important photos are accessible at all times, while remaining end-to-end encrypted.
  • Enhanced Security Against Breaches: Proton Drive’s end-to-end encryption (EE2E) not only provides robust protection against common security threats associated with cloud providers, but it also safeguards against vulnerabilities found in many third-party apps.

For users seeking further storage capacities, Proton Drive offers three paid plans. According to Singh, they are:

  • Drive Plus: Designed for users primarily seeking expansive storage capabilities, Drive Plus is the perfect solution. Priced affordably at US$3.99 per month, subscribers enjoy a generous allocation of 200GB, accommodating the needs of individuals and professionals who require a larger storage space.
  • Proton Family: Ideal for families and small groups, Proton Family provides all the benefits of Proton Unlimited while catering to up to six users. With a combined storage capacity of 3TB distributed across all members, Proton Family ensures ample space for storing photos, files, and documents for every user.
  • Proton Unlimited: As our flagship subscription plan, Proton Unlimited empowers users with an impressive 500GB of secure storage, available at a highly competitive rate of $9.99 per month. Subscribers to this plan gain full access to Proton Mail, Proton VPN, and Proton Pass premium features, offering a comprehensive suite of privacy-centric services.
  • Further plans for business are also available.
