Notable apps and app updates for May 19, 2016

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are today’s picks.

iOS apps and app updates

The Restricted Adventures of Raja

It seems like almost every day we hear about somebody badly mistreating a lost dog or cat. A sad situation from a few years ago when a 17 year old boy set a cat on fire was the impetus for Nicole Forsyth, CEO of RedRover, to work on creating an app and ebooks to teach children empathy towards animals. Here’s Nicole talking about the way to get kids to think about animals and their emotions before committing acts of cruelty:

The app — The Restricted Adventures of Raja ($2.99) was released today and is the first digital book and game in the RedRover Readers program. If you have kids, the program is a great way to help to teach them empathy for animals.

Mekorama

OK, we’ve recently reviewed this next new iOS app, but it’s worth mentioning again. Mekorama is a fun puzzle game that’s free to download and then you pay what you want for it. And did I mention that it’s fun? In a fashion similar to the runaway hit game Monument Valley, players move characters and manipulate structures to get their clumsy little robot to a goal. The app also lets players create and share their own game levels, so there may be thousands of puzzles to solve pretty soon. All I know is that I’d get a lot more work done if I didn’t have Mekorama on my iPhone!

OS X apps and app updates

Sparkle

Back in the good old days, Apple made a wonderful and easy-to-use website creator for OS X called iWeb. For some reason, the company stopped supporting the app and it has disappeared into the mists of history. Fortunately for those who want to create a professional-looking website but don’t want to go through gyrations to learn difficult apps to do so, apps like Sparkle (free with in-app purchases) are available.

Sparkle is used for award-winning websites, so it’s not just for beginners — it’s also a powerful app for those who need to quickly create landing pages or websites for clients. The recently released version 2.0.2 includes an incredible feature list that we can’t even begin to show here. Download it for free and give it a try!

CameraBag Cinema

Shoot a lot of video? The all new CameraBag Cinema ($59.99 introductory price) is designed to provide video filtering, color correction and film emulation in a standalone package that can also be used with Final Cut, Premiere or other non-linear editors. Whether you’re adjusting skin tone to compensate for lighting or wish to give your video a certain feel, CameraBag Cinema can do it with hundreds of presets and controls that you can use easily.
