Notable apps and app updates for August 4, 2016

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are today’s picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

Nest

Do you own a Nest Learning Thermostat? How about an Apple Watch? If the answer to both questions is “Yes”, then you know that you can already get notifications from your Nest products (the Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect) on your Watch through the Nest app. Today, Nest announced that the Nest app has been updated to allow control of the Thermostat from the Watch. Yep, you can cool the house a bit more with a tap on the wrist, or switch between home and away states. And you can do that wherever you happen to be in the world…provided you have a cell signal or Wi-Fi connection.

Elevate: Brain Training

While the efficacy of brain training apps is still unknown, many researchers believe that keeping your mind working can help people of any age to keep mentally sharp and possibly even delay the onset of dementia in older people. Elevate (free with in-app purchases) is one of many brain training apps that are available in the App Store, but it has a couple of things going for it — first, it was named as the 2014 App of the Year by Apple, and second, it works on everything from your Apple Watch to an iPad Pro.

OS X Apps/Updates

CloudMounter

We get updates from Product Hunt every day, and CloudMounter ($9.99) was one of the OS X apps that really stood out recently. It’s from the folks at Eltima Software, who have been making great Mac apps for years. What does CloudMounter do? Simple – it allows Mac users to mount cloud services as local drives and work with online files like we do local ones. Supporting Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, FTP, FTPS, SFTP, and WebDAV, CloudMounter doesn’t do syncing like native apps do. Instead, it’s a safe and secure utility that creates an all-in-one cloud solution.

Tap Forms Organizer 5

Tap Forms ($24.99 sale price today and tomorrow) is referred to as “the digital filing cabinet for life’s scattered details”, and the new version is perfect for keeping track of everything in your life both on Mac and on the optional iOS/Apple Watch app. Tap Forms 5 lets you store 23 different types of information, has over 33 built-in forms, and has a layout designer for making your own custom form layouts. The app provides fast searching, and can even print 24 different kinds of bar codes if you wish to use them to mark personal items. Get it today or tomorrow while it’s available for $24.99; after Friday, the price goes up to $49.99.
