Next iPad Pro update may not sport the U1 chip after all

Despite previous reports that the next iPad Pro update — expected this fall or early 2021 — would include the U1 chip introduced with the iPhone 11 line-up, MacRumors says it has “compiled evidence” that this may not happen.

Or at least “Apple has simply disabled the U1 chip in the new iPad Pro until it becomes more useful, such as when Apple releases its rumored AirTags item tracking tags. The AirTags would be a competitor to the Tile, a tiny Bluetooth tracker and app combo.

The U1 will enable so-called ultra-wideband positioning powers, giving devices the ability to determine each other’s location when they’re in close proximity. It allows the latest iPhone models to precisely locate and communicate with other U1-equipped devices and also offers improved spatial awareness.
