News round-up: Intel to quit making 5G smartphone modems (and more)

Since Steve and I can’t cover everything, at the end of each week day, we’ll offer this wrap-up of news items you should check out.

Apple supplier Intel has announced plans to exit the 5G smartphone modem business following the settlement of the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm. The latter will supply modems for upcoming iPhones (starting in 2020) — well, at least until Apple develops its own modems.

Apple has posted  a new video dubbed “Don’t Mess With Mother” in its “Shot on iPhone” series to its YouTube channel. The “Mother” it refers to is Mother Nature.

Terry Gou, president of Apple supplier Foxconn, says he plans to run for president of Taiwan. This week he announced that he was stepping down from daily operations at Foxconn.

At NAB in Las Vegas, Eli MacKinnon, Communication Director for Insta360, showed MacVoices the new Evo camera that does double duty as both a 360-degree camera and a stereoscopic camera, and the new commercial-grade Titan 360-degree camera that delivers cinematic VR results.

T-Mobile says it’s launched a call protection feature with Comcast Corp to help protect customers from answering robocalls and spams, as robocalls have swollen into a tide numbering in the millions every day.

Uber has announced that users who want to use Apple Pay can finally do so using FaceID or TouchID in the Uber Eats app, instead of filling out their billing information.
