MacOffice 2019 gets macOS Big Sur, Apple Silicon Mac compatibility

Microsoft has updated its Mac Office 2019 for Mac, adding support for macOS Big Sur and compatibility with Apple Silicon/M1 machines.

The latest release of apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and OneDrive can be installed on devices that are based on the Apple Silicon architecture. Microsoft says for the best experience, install the November 2020 release (build 16.43), or later.

Apple Silicon is, per Apple, “world-class custom silicon to deliver industry-leading performance and powerful new technologies” as the tech giant phases out Intel processors in its Mac line. It involves customized ARM technology, as well as Apple’s own System on a Chip.

This week Apple announced a 13-inch MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini that use the tech. They’re powered by an Apple-designed M1 processor.
