Latest iOS 11.4 beta release seems to underscore the fate of Apple’s AirPort hardware line

Some of us kept hoping that Apple wasn’t abandoning its AirPort line, but this seems to be the case. As noted by AppleInsider, AirPort Express is no longer showing up in the Home app for users on the latest iOS 11.4 beta, “casting doubt that it will be updated to use as an AirPlay 2 target.”

In November2016, Bloomberg reported that the tech giant was abandoning the AirPort Express, the AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule, and was disbanding its division that develops wireless routers. The article said Apple started shutting down the wireless router team in 2015, dispersing engineers to other product development groups, including the one handling the Apple TV. The products, which cost $99, $199, and $299, respectively, make up a small slice of Apple’s revenue and are part of Apple’s “other products” category on its financial statements.
