Kiera Knightly to star in period drama on Apple TV+

Actress Kiera Knightly — famous for the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, The Imitation Game, Sense and Sensibility, Atonement, and more — will start in an adaptation of the period novel “The Essex Serpent” written by Sarah Perry for Apple TV+, reports Deadline.

The period drama follows newly widowed Cora, played by Knightley, who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area. No word on when it will debut.

Apple ordered the series from See-Saw Films, the company behind The King’s Speech and Top of the Lake. It will be directed by Dark River and The Selfish Giant director Clio Barnard and written by Mrs Wilson writer Anna Symon.
