How to unlock an iCloud-locked iPhone

If you’ve bought a used or refurbished iPhone online, or are having trouble with your own iPhone, you may get an “iCloud-locked” message. Thankfully, there are ways to work around the problem.

iCloud lock is a protective measure Apple builds into their iPhones in case your phone gets misplaced. your phone is misplaced. It’s tied into the tech giant’s Find My app, which makes it easy to keep track of your Apple devices, including iPhones, AirPods, Macs, etc.

Activation Lock

Find My includes Activation Lock—a feature that’s designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, if it’s ever lost or stolen. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you turn on Find My on your device.

Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My. After it’s turned on, Apple securely stores your Apple ID on its activation servers and links it to your device. Your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.

If you bought a used iPhone and the previous owner failed to sign out of their iCloud account, this feature will prevent you from signing in. Or you may have forgotten your password. Or someone could be trying to access your iCloud account, which could result in them changing the password.

One unlocking method: DNS Bypass

You can unlock an iPhone with Activation Lock with DNS bypass:

° Once you switch on your device, choose your LANGUAGE and COUNTRY from the menu.

°  Click “Proceed” to enter the Wi-Fi settings page. If asked to connect to Wi-Fi, look for the “I” symbol closed to the Wi-Fi tab.

° Now, disconnect the Wi-Fi network, go to “Connection Settings” and click “Forget this Network”.

° Now, click the “I” and enter a DNS server IP address to bypass the iCloud activation lock. You can choose from the list below according to your location:

  • USA:
  • South America:
  • Europe:
  • Asia:
  • Australia and Oceania:
  • Other continents:

° Now, click the “Back” option at the left side of your screen, turn on Wi-Fi, select the right network from the list, and enter your passcode.

° Click “Next Page” and click “Back” to enter the iCloud bypass screen.

You now set up your apps and use your device as you like.

However, there are disadvantages of using DNS bypass. It only works with iOS devices running iOS 8 to iOS 10. The method doesn’t work in all countries or regions. The steps to use it are tedious and may be challenging to folks lacking tech skills. Plus, its success rate can’t be guaranteed.
