How to install Apple Watch software updates

On Tuesday, Apple released Watch OS 1.0.1, the first public update to the Apple Watch’s software. It’s a relatively minor update, with some performance improvements and support for new display emoji under the hood. Installing the update is easy, and requires only a few steps. Here’s how to install a software update on the Apple Watch.

Updates are distributed via the Apple Watch app for iPhone. When a new update becomes available, you’ll see a badge on the My Watch icon in the app’s toolbar. If not, tap General and then Software Update. You should see Watch OS 1.0.1 waiting for you.

In order for the update to be successful, your Watch:

  1. Must be within range of your iPhone (which has an active Internet connection)
  2. Be connected to its charger
  3. Have at least 50% battery life

Once you’re set, tap Install. The process doesn’t take very long and happens over the air. Your Mac is not involved. You can monitor the installation’s progress on the iPhone app. When the install is complete, your Watch will restart and you’re good!

Now, go and find those new emoji!
