Filing hints at bigger gaming plans for the Apple TV

Apple may have big gaming plans for their set-top box. As noted by Patently Apple, the tech giant has updated their Apple TV logo trademark by adding all things related to gaming.

The filing covers “video game consoles; controllers for game consoles; video output games, namely, video output game machines for use with televisions; apparatus for electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor.” The international filing covers over 60 different countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Apple turned the Apple TV into a more serious gaming console with tvOS 10 by giving developers the ability to require a third-party controller for games. Still, gamers have felt that the company has yet to truly turn the set-top box into a decent gaming console.Perhaps that’s about to change.

Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see the light of day. However, you never can tell which ones will materialize in a real product.
