Stanford University, Apple team up for new COVID-ID info app

Stanford University and Apple have partnered on a new iPhone app that provides police officers, firefighters, and paramedics in the Bay Area with info and safety measures regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

To serve frontline providers, Stanford Medicine say its First Responder COVID-19 Guide app was built with the “support of Apple to help these first responders screen their symptoms and, if needed, schedule a testing appointment.” The app uses Apple’s ResearchKit and CareKit frameworks.

ResearchKit turns an iPhone into a tool for medical research by helping doctors, scientists and other researchers gather data more frequently and more accurately from participants anywhere in the world using iPhone apps. CareKit is a tool for assisting people in taking an active role in their care.

“The goal is to ensure that first responders can efficiently access needed medical care while working under the safest possible conditions during the coronavirus outbreak,” Stanford says. “In the future, Stanford hopes to expand high-priority testing to frontline essential service workers, such as grocery store clerks and public service personnel, and to help first responders in other counties connect to one of Stanford Medicine’s seven outpatient testing facilities across the Bay Area.”
