AWT TV Episode 49: The 80/20 rule, Apple share price, and addicting games

It’s a new year for AWT TV, and Marty & Steve are back to talk about Apple and tech in general. This was our first episode back on the Zoom platform, so things are back to normal…meaning you get to see the intro/outro video once more, we’re able to share screens, and more.

We had a lot of fun with this episode! Steve talks about the Insta360 ONE X VR camera he’s been playing with, which isn’t just a really good VR camera but also has some incredible editing tools for iOS. Marty & Steve talk about the woes Apple has had with share price over the past two months — as of the time of this show, Apple was in fourth place in terms of company market capitalization. “How far the mighty have fallen!”

It’s obvious that Apple has finally reached peak iPhone, and we offer some suggestions to Apple CEO Tim Cook — who we’re SURE was watching the livestream last night — on how to get back in the game.

We also talk once again about how iPhones are not the be-all and end-all of the smartphone world, with Marty making the very good point that a cheap Android smartphone costing 20% of an iPhone can do 80% of the same things. Steve notes that most of the students in his iOS courses over the years have only used a fraction of the functionality of their iPhones, leading him to wonder if Apple should really look at “dumbing down” the phones instead of continually adding features.

Marty shows an iPhone calculator tip that Steve wasn’t aware of, and Steve demonstrates his latest time-waster: Microsoft Wordament, a free (ad-supported) word game app. Steve also talks about how Bare Bones Software’s BBEdit Mac text editing app has celebrated its 25th anniversary, and points to the company’s website where they have a very cool t-shirt for sale commemorating the milestone.

Our next show will be on January 22, 2019 at 5:30 PM PT / 8:30 PM ET. We’ll be live-streaming on Facebook and as usual, the recording will end up here on our YouTube channel shortly after. Enjoy!
