AWT TV Episode 27: November 7, 2017

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we’ll discuss what’s happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

What a great week! Last Friday marked the official debut of the iPhone X, and it’s a game-changer. Marty talked about how he decided to go back to the Apple TV 4K after having returned his first one. The issue that caused him to make that decision earlier was that the device upscaled everything to 4K, which didn’t look all that good for some shows. Apple has announced that an update will soon fix the problem so that movies and shows will appear in their native resolution.

Now how about that iPhone X? The device is best purchased on a monthly plan like those from Apple (the iPhone Upgrade Program) or carriers, where you know you’ll be able to use it for a year for about half the cost of purchasing it outright. Steve was able to pick his up quickly last Friday and had some hands-on time with one at the store before going through the checkout process. During that time, the Apple employees let him try out the new gestures and Face ID.

Face ID is the big game changer on this device. Apps and websites used to require fumbling around to find a password or make sure you could use Touch ID to authenticate. Now just a glance at the phone and you’re in. It’s fast and natural, and Steve wants to see it on every Apple product.

Steve does some quick demonstrations of the new gestures, the decidedly different aspect ratio of the screen, and so on. Marty might skip on getting an iPhone X for one very good reason; he’s got his eyes on an iMac Pro that should be available next month. He’ll use it to replace a ten-year-old machine, primarily for running virtual machines for gaming.
