This is Steve Sande for Apple World Today, and you’re listening to the AWT News Update for August 17th, 2017. Just a note; yours truly will be on a short trip for about 12 days, so it’s unlikely that the AWT News Update podcast will be published until August 30th. YouTube’s new YouTube TV service has expanded into 14 more US cities, now making the streaming service available in 29 American markets. The new cities are Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Columbus, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, Seattle, Tampa, and West Palm Beach. The service offers over 50 channels at $39.99 per month through the App Store for a base package with six accounts, and subscribers can watch their fill of video via iPhone, iPad and Mac, as well as on a TV via AirPlay. The service comes with a free cloud DVR function with no storage limit, which will make it popular for those who want to binge watch the same series over and over again.
An interesting find in the latest iOS 11 beta will make it possible for you to disable Touch ID quickly in those situations where you may be asked to unlock your iOS device for no reason at all by Customs and Border Protection officers. iOS 11 will let you bring up a special SOS screen by pressing the power button on an iPhone rapidly five times. That lets you do one of two things — use the phone to call 911 or enter a passcode to enable Touch ID. Touch ID won’t unlock your device until you enter that passcode. Don’t think that those Customs and Border Protection searches are rare; in February of 2017 alone, over 5,000 devices were searched, with users only being told that agents were looking for “information pertinent to investigations.”
Rumors about the Apple Watch Series 3 have been increasing in frequency lately, with a new report saying that Quanta is manufacturing the new devices and that shipments will happen “sometime in the fourth quarter”. The report was in the Chinese-language Economic Daily, and noted that the next version of the Watch is currently in final testing before production begins. We expect that the Series 3 Watch line will be announced along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s in September.
In Australia, McDonald’s is getting a head start on iPhone 8 action. The company sent out an email promoting the “mymacca” iPhone app that can be used in Australia to find restaurants and pre-order items for pickup in addition to getting loyalty rewards. The fun thing is that the email shows an iPhone 8 with an edge-to-edge OLED display with the expected sensor notch at the top of the screen. Well known leak source Benjamin Geskin took to Twitter to say that the fast food chain had used a render of his for its ad, although literally hundreds of renders have been made since Apple included an image of what the device will look like in early HomePod firmware. It’s thought that the company’s advertising team probably used the iPhone 8 render to both capture attention and appear to be on the cutting edge of technology.
