AWT Business Spotlight: WaterField Designs

Each week Apple World Today will spotlight a company that offers products or services for the Apple community. Today’s spotlight is on WaterField Designs (admittedly, one of my favorite companies), which has been in business for 22 years.

The company designs and makes tech gear locally in its San Francisco worship.

Founder Gary WaterFieldl began making bags in San Francisco in 1998 during the dotcom era as messenger bags were just becoming trendy. As a bike messenger and bike company manager shifting to a corporate job, he wanted an office-appropriate version of his bike bag. So, he created WaterField’s first bag — The Cargo — a hybrid messenger/briefcase, popular among dotcom techies.

In 2001, Apple introduced the PowerBook G4, and with design and production local, WaterField was able to create a custom-fit SleeveCase for it within days. Their first-to-market strategy jumpstarted sales, and as they designed more custom cases for Apple products, their following rapidly expanded. The WaterField portfolio has since grown to include briefcases, backpacks, shoulder bags, gaming cases, wallets, desk accessories, travel gear, and custom cases for an array of electronic devices including personal computers, smartphones, tablets, and more.
