What is the Difference Between a Search Engine and a Web Browser?

Many people interchange search engines and web browsers as they usually use them together, even though they are very different products presenting different services.

What is a Web Browser?

A web browser is a software that one can use to browse the web. It is commonly known just as a browser. It is popularly known as a web browser or a search engine.

Examples: Firefox, Chrome, Brave, Safari.

The web browser is likely the starting point for navigating to various services on your computer, like a search engine or favorite streaming site. However, smartphone apps can serve the web browser’s purpose in searching for information or visiting websites.

Today, most, if not all, of the popular tablets, smartphones, and even laptops have an inbuilt web browser. However, you can always download another browser of your preference.

What Happens When You Use a Web Browser?

A DNS matches the name of a domain or URL that you have entered in the address bar of a web browser to get an IP address corresponding to it. The device is called a client, and it sends TCP and HTTP requests to the servers where this web page resides, requesting the site. The server receives the request and composes the page according to HTML, which is the very building block of each site. Then, the server transmits the data back to your device. Later, the web browser will get the information from which you can select whatever interests you.

What is a Search Engine?

A search engine is a computer program that allows you to find information on the internet via keywords.

Examples: Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google, Yahoo

Suppose you want to explore the functionalities of a VPN. You open an internet browser and search for some websites with Google, typing keywords such as “What is a VPN” in the search field. The web search lists websites containing what you want to read.

What is the Procedure for Using a Search Engine?

Each search engine works with its search algorithm and ranks all content for a specific query. There are three things that a search engine does:

  • Crawling: Search engines explore the internet to discover information such as videos, images, web pages, and other content.
  • Indexing: It keeps such information in its index, with the more common term usually referring to the databases employed by search engines. In this regard, remember that only some things crawled will be indexed in the search engine.
  • Ranking: The search engine sorts out web pages and lists them on the page’s search results. Search engines consider many things when rating a web page, including the freshness of its content, relevance with your searches, and the number of other websites linking to it.

How is a Web Browser Different from a Search Engine?

Web browser (such as Firefox) software program for browsing the world wide web by obtaining webpages and showing them to you. Search engines like Google allow you to find specific websites by typing their keywords or key phrases.

For example, a web browser lets you get websites like BeEncrypted.com. Simply enter it into the URL bar. A search engine helps you find websites about a specific subject. A search for ‘how does a VPN work’ will provide a list of web pages describing how a VPN works.

Users commonly use them together. If you want to perform a search through a search engine, open up a browser like a Chrome browser and click there.
