Steve Jobs introduced the iPod 14 years ago today

Fourteen years ago, Apple was beginning to come back from the brink, led by the late CEO and co-founder of the company Steve Jobs. On October 23, 2001, Jobs introduced the device that is credited with jumpstarting the company's fortunes, making CDs and other MP3 players obsolete, and pointing the direction towards consuming music and other media off of thin, lightweight and pocketable devices -- the iPod.

Runkeeper releases standalone Apple Watch app

I'm a fan of Runkeeper, even though I don't run -- I walk. But it's a perfect app for capturing the details of any of those sort of activities, providing stats on your distance, duration, and -- on the iPhone app -- even a track of your most recent run or walk. I've used the Runkeeper Watch companion app for a while just to launch the iPhone app, but today the company introduced a completely redesigned Watch app that works as a standalone.

The mysterious “eye in speech bubble” emoji

While iOS 9.1 was still in beta testing, some testers noticed a new emoji that looks like an eye in the middle of a speech bubble. In fact, that's what Apple called it -- "eye-in-speech-bubble" -- and a lot of people were wondering what the heck it was all about. Thanks to designer Erik Vreland, who used Apple's text-to-speech capabilities on the emoji, we now know that it's the symbol of an anti-bullying campaign called "I Am A Witness" that launched today.

RIP Gary Allen, ifoAppleStore creator

For many years, if you wanted the latest scoop on Apple Store openings, updates, and designs, you went to one website: ifoAppleStore.com. The site was created by Gary Allen, who went to over 140 Apple Store openings around the globe during the run of the site. Earlier this year, Allen closed the site, stating that other sites were doing a good job of reporting Apple Store news. It turns out that Allen was suffering from brain cancer, and the Washington Post reports that he passed away on Sunday at age 67.

“Steve Jobs” has outstanding first weekend in limited release

After being one of the most talked-about movies in years -- at least on Apple blogs -- the Danny Boyle-directed, Aaron Sorkin-scripted not-very-biographical biopic Steve Jobs opened in four theaters in LA and New York on Friday. Despite the extremely limited release that was designed to create buzz for the film before a wider release this weekend, the movie pulled in $521,000 for a per-theater average (or PTA) of $130,250.

Beddit Sleep Tracker adds an Apple Watch app

When it comes to health, one aspect that is often overlooked is the quality and quantity of sleep that a person gets. There are a number of activity trackers that aim to quantify how well you're sleeping by figuring out how many times you toss and turn during the night, but they're only looking at external factors. The Beddit Sleep Tracker Smart (US$149) goes much further than those activity trackers by actually monitoring cardiac contraction forces through ballistocardiography. This detects individual heartbeats of one or two sleepers, as well as breathing rhythm and any respiratory issues a sleeper might be having. The results are displayed on an iPhone app, and now the device has a companion Apple Watch app.

Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard and M535 Bluetooth Mouse

A lot of us use Apple Keyboards and mice or trackpads on our Macs and iPads until that inevitable day when they fail; then it's time to look for something that's going to be a longterm replacement that won't cost an arm and a leg. Logitech recently introduced the K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard (US$39.99) and the M535 Bluetooth Mouse ($39.99), and I was able to put both to use with a tough customer -- my wife.
