Apple Watch rumors see fall launch, impressive sales goals

While DigiTimes isn't exactly one of the most accurate sources for information about Apple's plans, the website does have supply chain sources that cue it in to details about what's happening at Apple's manufacturing plants and the suppliers that feed those plants. DigiTimes today reported that orders for a new, second-generation Apple Watch have been "rather agressive," with Apple looking at ship rates as high as 2 million units per month.

Pad & Quill’s Timberline cases: Same beautiful wood, more protection

Back at the end of February, Apple World Today featured a review of a gorgeous new wooden case for iPhones from the folks at Pad & Quill. The Woodline case has been a rousing success for the company, as well as the case that I've had on my iPhone 6s Plus for most of 2016. If there's one thing I wanted from the Woodline, it was a bit more protection. Pad & Quill's new Timberline cases (US$39.95) are perfect in that respect, adding a tough polycarbonate case to the beautiful wood found on the Woodline. Here's Brian "Mr. PQ" Holmes to tell you about the case:

APFS: What you need to know

Every computing device made by Apple uses a file system to read and write data. Currently, most Mac users are familiar with the term HFS+, where the HFS stands for Hierarchical File System. That file system has been around for almost 30 years in both Unix and OS X, so it's not particularly engineered for today's devices -- from Apple Watch to Mac Pro. So Apple has announced a new file system -- Apple File System or APFS -- that will be part of all devices in the future, shipping on all starting in 2017. macOS Sierra will provide most Mac users with their first close-up look at APFS.

App Review Guidelines: The Comic Book

Apple developers often find that writing and testing an app is easier than actually getting the app approved by Apple. The company has a set of strict App Review Guidelines that are incredibly difficult to read through. So yesterday at the end of the Apple Design Award ceremony, the company announced that it's made the App Review Guidelines a lot easier to digest by turning them into a comic book (link to the Apple App Review page).

Swift Playgrounds: Teaching Swift development to everybody

Swift has been widely adopted by developers in the two years since it was introduced, and since it was made an open source project by Apple, the language knows no bounds -- it can be used on a number of platforms, not just those made by Apple. Today, Apple announced Swift Playgrounds, a free iPad app to teach kids of any age basic coding skills in Swift.

I said “No predictions,” but…

OK, during the past week I've made at least two tweets in which I said I wouldn't make any predictions about the WWDC keynote. But I'm sorry, I have been an Apple geek since 1984, I attended many of the WWDC events in the early 1990s, and I have a vested interest in the continuing success of the company -- both as a business owner and as a shareholder. So here are my predictions for the upcoming keynote:

Why haven’t you customized your Mac OS X Toolbar?

I’m teaching a class on Mac basics at University of Texas Informal Classes and It freaks me out that not a single one of my students knew you could customize the Toolbar and Sidebar. And that’s a shame since they’re two powerful features that have been around since time immemorial and are common to all Finder windows in all versions of OS X.
