Installing macOS Sierra Public Beta

Are you thinking about installing the Public Beta of macOS Sierra on a Mac? There are some amazing features coming, although some of them "aren't ready for prime time" at this early date. In this post I'll provide you with a list of caveats, and if you decide that you have a spare machine available for the beta, then you have a primer on how to sign up for the Public Beta program and then install macOS Sierra on your Mac.

Daily Deal: Watch your streaming video services anywhere with a Getflix Lifetime Subscription

You love your Hulu, watch Netflix every night, and have a handful of other streaming video services you keep your eye on. Then you go on vacation or a business trip in another country, and suddenly your access to those services -- that you're paying for -- is gone. Why? The answer is geo-restrictions, which keep you from getting your fix of video worldwide. Getflix is a service that routes your streaming video through its own servers and knocks out those restrictions, letting you enjoy Hulu and other services wherever you may roam. We have a deal on a lifetime subscription to Getflix for just $39.

TrackR Bravo: Finally, a Bluetooth tracker that really works

Bluetooth trackers are nothing new; quite a few companies have created little devices that you can connect to keys, drop into wallets, or stick to remotes to help you find them when they've been misplaced. A while back I reviewed the first-generation TrackR device for TUAW, and at the time I found it was lacking in a few areas. Range was spotty, the built-in speaker was barely audible, and the app seemed flaky. TrackR Bravo ($29.99 for one, $89.99 for five, $119.99 for ten)-- the second generation of the device -- has been shipping for a while so I thought it was a good time to try it out.

Logitech CREATE Keyboard Case for 12.9-inch iPad Pro: The keyboard Apple should have made

Since I first picked up my 12.9-inch iPad Pro last November, I've used the $169.99 Apple Smart Keyboard. While it's nice -- and I do love the use of the Smart Connector so I never have to worry about charging the keyboard or pairing it with my Pro -- there are some things that have made me wish I had another keyboard. I've had the $149.99 Logitech CREATE Keyboard Case for just a short time, but already find it to be a much better keyboard than the one Apple created.

AWT News Update: July 7, 2016

Summer, the time of year when you pile everyone into the Family Truckster and head out on vacation. When I was a kid many, many years ago, we didn't have all of the fun electronic devices that today's back seat occupants can use to stay occupied on the road, so we did things like play license plate bingo and annoy each other. Today we're looking at the latest from accessory manufacturer Kenu, the Airvue car tablet mount ($49.95) -- a way to hold that phablet or tablet in position on the back of a headrest and keep the kids entertained.

Android handset makers rumored to be slowing down component orders ahead of iPhone 7 launch

While DigiTimes isn't exactly known for its accuracy when it comes to many rumors, the website does have a good number of electronics supply chain contacts that often share information on components that are used in the manufacture of smartphones. Those contacts have provided DigiTimes with numbers showing that Android handset makers are cutting back on component orders in anticipation of fierce competition from Apple's next smartphone -- the iPhone 7.

Carbon Copy Cloner 4: A close look at a popular Mac backup utility

Most Mac users are happy to use the Time Machine backup utility built into OS X, but that utility has a shortcoming -- it doesn't create a bootable copy on the backup drive. That's why third-party utilities such as Bombich Software's Carbon Copy Cloner 4 (US$39.99) have remained so popular.
