Apple achieves an iPhone landmark in India

<p>According to the latest research from <a target="_blank" href="http://www.counterpointresearch.com" rel="noopener noreferrer">Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service</a>, the smartphone shipments in India grew 18% annually in 2016 compared to the global smartphone market which grew 3%.     Apple achieved a landmark with the iPhone, crossing 2.5 million units in a calendar year, with one-third of its total shipment coming alone from the record fourth quarter driven by seasonality and the launch of iPhone 7.</p>

Apple reportedly set to join the Partnership on AI

<p>Apple is reportedly set to join the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.partnershiponai.org" rel="noopener noreferrer">Partnership on AI</a>, an artificial intelligence research group that includes Amazon, Alphabet’s Google, Facebook, and Microsoft. Apple’s admission into the group could be announced as soon as this week, reports <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-01-26/apple-said-to-join-amazon-google-facebook-in-ai-research-group" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bloomberg</a>, quoting unnamed “people familiar with the situation.”</p>

Apple hires founder of Dropcam for an (apparently) unknown project

<p>Greg Duffy, a former Nest manager, has joined Apple—the company where Mr. Fadell made his name. It’s not clear what his position will be, but according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theinformation.com/dropcams-greg-duffy-joins-apple" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Information</a> “given his background, starting security camera firm Dropcam, people who know Mr. Duffy suggest he is likely to be leading a special project at Apple that is operating like a startup within the company.”</p>

Apple Pay use is on the rise

<p>Consumer spending analytics company <a target="_blank" href="http://www.txn.com" rel="noopener noreferrer">TXN</a> says that Apple Pay is on the rise, based on data from its panel of over three million consumers. Analysis of credit card bills from banks that distinguish Apple Pay transactions suggest that usage of the payment method grew by slightly over 50% in the 12 months ending December 2016.</p>
