Apple’s 2024 laptop with M3 Max chip will be ‘the most powerful MacBook Pro yet’

Apple is testing the next-generation M3 Max chip, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. He expects it to debut alongside the M3 Pro processor in the “most powerful MacBook Pro yet” next year.

He says the new M3 Max chip includes 16 main processing cores and 40 graphics cores, according to test logs from a third-party Mac app developer that were seen by Bloomberg News. Compared to the M2 Max, that’s four more CPU cores and two more GPU cores.

The processor is apparently at the heart of a high-end MacBook Pro laptop — a model codenamed J514. The test machine also includes 48GB memory. However, Gurman says there will likely be higher upgrade options available as the current MacBook Pro supports up to 96GB memory.

The first Macs to built with 3nm M3 (non-Max and non-Pro) processors are expected this October. They’re likely to include a 24-inch iMac, new Mac mini, MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
