Apple supporting the UK’s Year of Engineering initiative

Apple has thrown its support behind the UK government’s Year of Engineering and is bringing students to meet with several of its important teams, reports The Independent.

At the launch of the project, Apple brought more than 20 children to meet three engineers from its silicon engineering team. The team is based in St Albans and works with Apple’s Cupertino, California team to design the chips that power its phones, iPads and other products.

“The UK is home to some of the most highly skilled silicon engineers in the world and we’re excited that our UK Silicon Design Centre is located in an area with world-renowned universities and a high concentration of incredible talent to help us advance even further ahead,” Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president for hardware, told The Independent.

In November 2017, the UK government announced that 2018 would be the Year of Engineering, a national campaign to increase awareness and understanding of what engineers do among young people aged 7-16, their parents and their teachers. It also forms an important part of the Industrial Strategy “which is committed to boosting engineering across the UK, ensuring everyone has the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy.”
