Apple purportedly suspends work on Vision Pro 2 to focus on a less expensive spatial computer

Apple has told at least one supplier that it’s suspended work on an Apple Vision Pro 2 to focus on a less expensive version, reports The Information.

Quoting an unnamed source, the article says the tech giant is still working on a more affordable spatial computer with fewer features before the end of 2025. The Information claims that Apple originally planned to split the Vision line-up into standard and pro models.

The article says the goal is to have the standard version sell for about US$1,600 — less than half of the current Apple Vision Pro. MacRumors has reported that the cheaper model will feature the same high-end displays as the Vision Pro, but with fewer cameras, a simpler headband, and smaller speakers. Apple also wants to make its cheaper headset at least one-third lighter than the Vision Pro.

The rumor kinda lines upon with an April 29 report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple won’t launch a second-generation version of its Vision Pro headset until the end of 2026. He said such a device is at least 18 months away.

Gurman says Apple is still trying to figure out how to make it less expensive to purchase, though the tech giant is still “flummoxed” on how to do this. The Sellers Research Group (thats me) also thinks Apple is looking into ways to make the spatial computer more comfortable to wear.

Of course, Apple’s ultimate goal is (I think) making “Apple Glasses” that could provide audio (so users don’t have to wear AirPods) and take advantage of artificial intelligence (AI) and cameras to identify things in the surrounding world.

Gurman has said that such a device also could act as a stepping stone toward Apple’s long-held dream: true augmented reality spectacles that you can wear all day.
