Apple plans to ship at least 80 million 5G-equipped smartphones in 2020

Apple plans to ship at least 80 million of 2020 iPhones with 5G technology, according to The Nikkei Asian Review. The article says the next gen smartphones will also sport “leading-edge screens.”

Nikkei Asian Review says that the 2020 iPhones will pack the most advanced 5G modem chip, known as X55, which is designed by Qualcomm, and an A14 Apple-made processor that will use the world’s most advanced 5-nanometer chip technology.

At least two of the three new phones will purportedly have flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. In addition, Apple is developing a new 3D sensing rear-camera that can sense the environment and detect objects for applications such as augmented reality games, sources said.

By 2021 or 2022, expect smartphones to include Apple-made 5G modems. In July, it was announced that Apple and Intel have signed an agreement for Apple to acquire the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business.

Approximately 2,200 Intel employees are joining Apple, which acquires intellectual property, equipment and leases involving Intel’s modem tech. The transaction, valued at $1 billion, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019.
