Apple needs a Quality Control team

In a Macworld article, Michael Simon says that Apple should hire or promote someone to a new position of Senior Vice President of Quality Control. He’s right. In fact, the company needs a whole team on the matter.

“That person and their team would solely be responsible for finding the little things that turn into big headlines and squashing them,” he writes. “Take the products home, incorporate them into their daily lives, and use them in real ways, not contrived laboratory tests.”

Apple has just fixed the “throttling” issues with the new MacBook Pros, but now it appears that there may be a problem with the T2 chip on the new laptops, as well as the iMac Pro.

As Michael points out, this follows a string of problems such as a root bug in iOS 11, a root bug in macOS High Sierra, unresponsive screens in cold weather on the iPhone X, LTE issues with the Apple Watch Series 3, and the “white rings on furniture” issue with the HomdPod. All these issues are PR nightmares for Apple and undermine the company’s (desired) reputation for making products that “just work.”

Apple is rolling in dough, so let’s hope they take Michael’s suggestion and hire a Senior Vice President of Quality Control. In fact, let’s make an entire Quality Control team. With Apple’s ever-growing line of hardware and software products, this is a job that needs more than one person.
