Apple Music using Shazam to help divine streaming royalties

Apple Music has created a process to properly identify and compensate all of the individual creators involved in making a DJ mix, reports TechCrunch

Using technology from Shazam, the streaming music service is working with major and independent labels to devise a fair way to divide streaming royalties among DJs, labels, and artists who appear in the mixes. TechCrunch says this is intended to help DJ mixes retain long-term monetary value for all creators involved, making sure that musicians get paid for their work even when other artists iterate on it.

Shazam is a music recognition app that Apple acquired in 2018 for US$400. Last year it passed 200 monthly active users worldwide. It’s available as a standalone app and as a built-in feature on the iPhone and iPad, accessible through a Music Recognition toggle in the iOS and iPadOS Control Center.
