Apple drops to sixth in the global laptop market

Apple has dropped to sixth in the global laptop market with its market share sliding to 6.5%, according to new data from TrendForce. That’s down from 7.7% in the first quarter of 2018.

However, the research group expects Mac laptop shipments to again post a large quarter-over-quarter increase in the third quarter of 2018, as Apple has released new MacBook Pros with “a new MacBook Air” due at the end of the quarter. The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) is skeptical.

I think the MacBook Air line will be canceled with a new 12-inch MacBook priced below $1,000 replacing it. I also think there’ll be a new 13-inch MacBook introduced as the higher-end consumer laptop.

The worldwide notebook shipments in 2Q18 grew above expectations by 10.2% quarter-over-quarter and 2.8% year-over-year to 41.08 million units, according to TrendForce. HP again topped the shipment/market share ranking of notebook brands with 26.2% market share. Coming in second through fifth place were Lenovo (20%), Dell (19.6%), Acer (8%), and Asus (7.4%).
