In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will release iPad Pros and MacBook Pros with mini-LED displays in 2020 or 2021.
He adds that the displays will use 10,000 mini-LEDs and will be comparable to OLED screens. Kuo says the Mini LED screens will be produced by LG Display, and utilize components from half a dozen other suppliers, including Epistar.
Kuo says that the new iPad Pro will be released at the end of 2020 or the start of 2021. The MacBook Pro will be early 2021, he adds.
Kuo believes the mini-LED displays will make for thinner and lighter products. He thinks they will also result in good wide color gamut performance, high contrast and HDR, and local dimming,
Chances the rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. It makes sense as Apple pushes the envelope on its high-end portables. Also, Kuo’s prediction doesn’t negate the possibility that Apple will release a 16-inch or 17-inch MacBook Pro with the mini-LED feature this fall.
