Advance look: the OpenCase improves the stability of MagSafe accessories attached to an iPhone

It’s hard to find an iPhone case that offers something a little different, but I’ve found one. The OpenCase has an interesting design that improves the stability of MagSafe accessories.

It’s hard to find an iPhone case that offers something a little different, but I’ve found one. The OpenCase has an interesting design that improves the stability of MagSafe accessories.

It’s still in “Kickstarter” funding mode, but Apple World Today got an advance copy. Consider this a pre-release peak/review before it becomes generally available. When it does, I can give you pricing info.

MagSafe is a magnetic technology from Apple, built into the internal engineering of iPhone 15/14/13/12 models. Originally created as a safety feature for MacBook charging cords, MagSafe was incorporated into the iPhone 15/14/13/12 to create a new ecosystem of accessories for easy attachment and faster wireless charging.

However, MagSafe accessories can move around or get dislodged from your smartphone if it’s stashed in pocket, purse, or travel case. The OpenCase solves this problem by creating a “pocket” in the case — the “Accessory-Hold” area — that makes accessories thinner than if they were sitting on the back of a case. The lip around the “Accessory-Hold” area helps keep MagSafe accessories securely attached.

OpenCase sports an “open” area that’s compatible with the Apple Wallet and Apple’s external battery. What’s more, the designers of OpenCase offers five accessories designed specifically to work with the case:

  • MagWallet – a MagSafe compatible wallet;
  • PopHolder – a MagSafe compatible pop-out grip;
  • CarMount&Charger – a MagSafe compatible car phone mount and Qi charger;
  • StandByStand – a Qi charger and stand;
  • FillerPlate – a matching plate that fills the open area to provide full-coverage when not using any other accessories;

The OpenCase is light and holds all MagSafe accessories securely. The OpenCase also has all-metal buttons an attractive, grip leatherette, soft touch design that’s easy to clean and which surrounds the iPhone’s camera.

I really like the OpenCase, though I have two caveats. I find the MagWallet just too small for my uses; I prefer the BAZZA Armonic. And with some MagSafe accessories attached to my iPhone 15 Pro Max, it makes things VERY tight when I place the smartphone in The Answer 400 from simple.be (my favorite iPhone case).

The OpenCase is compatible with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 in all sizes (regular, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max). And it’s available in any color you like — as long as you like black.
