Apple TV+ eyes 2023 Cannes launch for Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio

Apple TV+ is eyeing a 2023 Cannes Film Festival launch for Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated “Killers of the Flower Moon,” reports Deadline. The article adds that it will roll out with a full-blown theatrical release through Paramount, a studio that was always part of the deal.

The 76th edition of the “Festival de Canne”s due to take place from May 16-27, 2023. The festival is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from all around the world.

About ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart and De Niro as his uncle, a powerful local rancher. The movie, set in 1920s Oklahoma, depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

Set in 1920s Oklahoma when the Osage Nation discovered oil under their land, the Native Americans found themselves being murdered one by one. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case and unraveled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.

Another big budget Apple film, “Emancipation,” has in numerous reports been scratched from the upcoming awards-season race because of last year’s Best Actor winner Will Smith’s moment of Oscar infamy (the slap heard ‘round the world). However, the film, which is finished, was never dated by Apple, and Deadline says that the film may make its debut on Apple TV+ later this year or early next year.

About ‘Emancipation’

Apple acquired Emancipation for US$120 in a bidding war. Here’s how the movie is described: Will Smith plays Peter, a slave who fled a plantation in Louisiana after he was whipped within an inch of his life. He had to outwit cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on a torturous journey north. There, he joined the Union Army. The thriller is based on Peter’s true story and was inspired by the haunting photo of his bare back, scarred from the brutal whipping. The image, which came to be known as “The Scourged Back,” was published by The Independent in May 1863 and then in the Harper’s Weekly. It became indisputable proof of the barbarity of slavery in America, solidified the cause of abolitionists and prompted many free Blacks to join the Union Army.
