Strategy Analytics: Apple tops smartphone apps processor revenue

The smartphone apps processor (AP) market posted an all-time-high revenue in quarter three of 2020, driven by increased mix of 5G APs, according to Strategy Analytics. And Apple led in AP generated revenue.

A smartphone AP is a chip used for the primary application processing in contrast with the chips that handle functions such as the display, wireless communications and power management. The global smartphone AP market grew 32% in revenue terms to $7.4 billion in the quarter, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, HiSilicon, and Samsung LSI captured the top-five revenue share spots in the global smartphone applications processor (AP) market.

The smartphone maker led the smartphone AP market with a 31% revenue share, followed by Qualcomm with 21% and MediaTek with 19%. Smartphone AP market posted all-time-high revenue in the third quarter of 2020, driven by increased mix of 5G APs. And smartphone APs with on-device artificial intelligence (AI) grew 28% during the time period.
