New York Attorney General Letitia James has called on Apple and Google to impose stricter rules on contact tracing apps, according to Business Insider.
While both tech giants have set out guidelines for apps built on their “exposure notification” application programming language (API), the same rules aren’t enforced for third-party apps in their stores, the article adds. James has written to both companies requesting that only verified public health authorities can publish apps that transmit sensitive health information, along with other rules.
Business Insider says its recent investigation discovered that only a few U.S. states are interested in Apple and Google’s own contact tracing technology.
On April 10, Apple and Google announced a joint effort to help governments and health agencies reduce the spread of COVID-19. They’ve launched a solution that includes APIs and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing.
