HitCase’s $69.99 SPLASH has just about everything I’m looking for in an iPhone case. My only issue — and it’s not really HitCase’s fault — is that the SPLASH is adds a smidge too much width to the Apple smartphone (in my case, an iPhone Xs Max) to allow it to slip into smartphone holsters, which I like to use.
Otherwise, it’s got just about everything. It’s thin and light. It’s waterproof, drop-proof, and dust-proof. It has a MIL-SPEC shock rating to six feet and IP68 waterproof rated to 10 feet (so you can use it, for example, for snorkeling, but not for scuba diving).
The two-piece design case has a built-in screen protector, not an adhesive one, that doesn’t affect the touch technology of the smartphone.. Its soft grip exterior adds some nice “grippability” to prevent the iPhone from slipping out of your hand.
It’s easy to install. You open the case, check the seals, place the iPhone inside, close the ports, and test it in a sink to make sure there’s no water leakage, and you’re good to go. When taking pictures or recording underwater video you should your camera app prior to submerging your SPLASH; you can use the volume buttons to take pictures/start recording.
But the real feature of the Hitcase PRO is that it can be used with a bunch of accessories, not the least of which are the screw mounted lenses. The TrueLUX Wide Lens is $39.99 by itself and provides a 111° field of view in photo mode or a 83.6° field of view when shooting video. The TrueLUX iPhone Lens Bundle begins shipping in a week or so; it consists of the Wide lens, a SuperWide, and a Macro lens. All lenses come with two lens caps — one for each side of the lens — and microfiber pouch bags that are also useful for cleaning smudges off of the lenses.
The SPLASH does muffle the iPhone’s audio just slightly. However, for me, that’s worth the tradeoff for its durability and drop/water protection. My biggest gripe is that the case is supposedly wireless charging compatible, but I found it wouldn’t work with all such chargers.
