Apple has said it will once again make its own external monitors after having discontinuing its Thunderbolt Displays in 2016 (which was a bad idea). I wouldn’t consider making a MacBook Pro my main computer until this happens.
Since ditching its own display line, Apple has been recommending LG’s UltraFine 4K and 5K monitors, but they lack the oomph factor and gorgeous looks of the late, lamented Thunderbolt Displays. And new Apple monitors probably won’t ship until the company releases its new modular Mac Pro — which isn’t slated to happen until sometime in 2019.
I’d be pleasantly surprised if Apple releases new Thunderbolt Displays whenever it updates its MacBook Pro line (which will likely happen this summer or early fall). When it does, let’s hope that such a display will be available in both 4K and 5K versions — and with all the ports of an iMac, not just the USB-C ports on the current LG monitors.
