Apple and IBM are expanding their partnership to allow customers to roll out advanced in-app machine learning capabilities through Apple’s Core ML and IBM’s Watson technology. TechCrunch reports that the project expansion lets clients develop machine learning tools based on Watson technology, then deploy those assets in app form on Apple portable devices.
Core ML is a foundational machine learning framework used across Apple products, including Siri, Camera, and QuickType. According to Apple, it “delivers blazingly fast performance with easy integration of machine learning models enabling you to build apps with intelligent new features using just a few lines of code.” Watson is a question answering computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language.
Apple says on its developer site that, with Watson Services for Core ML, it’s easy to build apps that access Watson capabilities right from an iPhone and iPad, so “you can provide dynamic, intelligent insights that improve over time.” With the IBM Cloud Developer Console for Apple, you can tap into Watson Services for Core ML and other services on IBM Cloud.
