On June 29, 2007, I was one of those many people around the country who was standing in line at an Apple Store to try to get one of the first iPhones. The purchase was going to be a change for me; Cingular (now AT&T) didn’t allow users to swap SIMs between devices — something I needed to do at the time — but since it was the sole carrier at launch of the iPhone, I decided to part ways with T-Mobile.
At the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, CO, there was a lot of anticipation. Some people in line were holding spaces for others who would arrive at the official launch time (which I think was 5 PM), and the line grew longer as the day went by. It was such a new experience to have a line for an electronic product that all of the local news stations sent crews by to interview the people in line.
In 2007 I hadn’t started writing for TUAW yet, and had my own site called The iPhone Ranch, so all of my “coverage” was for my readership at the time. Later when I worked for TUAW, I put the video out on our YouTube channel; today I recovered it and it’s now where it should be — on the AWT YouTube channel.
