TrackX is powerful Final Cut Pro X plug-in, though it has a learning curve

By Chris Gannon

Coremelt’s $99 TrackX is a powerful third party plug in for use with Final Cut Pro X.  I’ve been using TrackX now for a few weeks and have come to truly appreciate the possibilities that TrackX offers.

It took some time for me to figure out how exactly this program worked. Track X does provide some very helpful tutorials that I would highly recommend, especially for a FCPX novice like myself. In the end however I was able to figure out how to use the program.

One suggestion would be to shoot video with TrackX in mind. I had a lot of trouble trying to use video that I already had on my Mac. If the lighting wasn’t just right or if there was a little interference then TrackX couldn’t keep up with the object. Even though it takes two to three times as long as the video to initially track, I didn’t really find that to be too long or a problem.  There were times when I was trying to outline the object I wanted to track that I couldn’t see the object well because of the instructions that, for some reason, were covering up the whole picture in the preview window.

Even though there were some inconveniences, I still feel that TrackX is worth having.  There’s not an integrated tracker in FCPX, and TrackX fills that need for those who want to be able to track.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but with time and good planning while filming, TrackX can help you add a lot of remarkable effects to your video.
