One of the big issues with traveling internationally at this time is that it’s often difficult and/or expensive to get data plans in other countries. Sure, you can buy a local SIM and slap it into your iPhone or iPad, provided that your device is carrier-unlocked. Now the Spanish subsidiary of UK-based Truphone has set up a roaming plan for its customers that allows them to use data contract-free in 40 countries.
The plan works on any iPad with an Apple SIM, which includes both cellular models of the iPad Pro, the iPad Air 2, and the iPad mini 3 and 4. Prices are fairly reasonable compared to some roaming plans we’ve seen: 500MB over a 30-day period for €8 ($8.53) up to 3GB over that 30-day period for €20 ($21.33).
The Apple SIM is a proprietary subscriber information module that lets customers sign up for temporary data roaming service in a country without a contract and without needing to swap out a SIM card, all from the iOS Settings app. At the present time, the Apple SIM supports AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in the US, EE in the UK, KDDI in Japan and GigSky in over 90 countries worldwide.
The company announced it will make it possible for those in other countries to sign onto the data plans soon. Truphone lists the following territories as being supported by the roaming data plan Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, France Guiana, Germany, Greece, Guadeloupe, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Span, Sweden, United Kingdom, USA, Reunion Island, Vatican City.
