Worldwide shipments of traditional PCs (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) totaled 70.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016 (4Q16), posting a year-on-year decline of 1.5%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The Mac pretty much stayed even in the global market for the quarter, but saw its market share dip when the entire year of 2016 is considered.
IDC says was boosted by the launch of new MacBook Pro models during the fourth quarter. The company moved back into fourth place and stabilized global shipments. Apple sold approximately 5.3 million Macs during 4Q16 for 7.5% market share, which is pretty much on par for the year ago period. Globally, it sold over 18 million Macs in 2016 for 7.1% market share for the year; that’s down 9.85 year-over-year.
The top five global PC vendors, and their 2016 market share are: Lenovo (21.3%, down 3% year-over-year), HP (20.9%, up 1.3%), Dell (15.7%, up 4.3%), ASUS (7.4%, down 0.8%).
